Professor Bidya Shanker Sahay is an educator, researcher, transformational leader and institution builder, who sets high standards to create world class institutions with global outlook and national focus. Currently he is working as Founder Director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu. Prior to joining IIM Jammu, Prof. Sahay was the Founder Director of IIM Raipur, Director of Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon and Director of Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Ghaziabad. He was also Advisor to the Chancellor, NMIMS University, Mumbai and mentoring five Campuses of NMIMS.
Under the able leadership of Prof. Sahay, IIM Jammu is ranked 17th amongst all 21 IIMs and overall 36th in India in the NIRF 2024 Rankings and ranked 22nd in IIRF 2024. Within a short span of 6 years, IIM Jammu is known for academic excellence, high quality research, international collaboration, executive education and community services. Prof. Sahay started two unique programs, Dual Degree Program (B.Tech. + MBA) with IIT Jammu and MBA (Hospital Administration and Healthcare Management) with AIIMS Jammu and IIT Jammu, beside starting Ph.D., Executive MBA and IPM Programs. His concern for quality, transparency and process orientation in pursuit of excellence is visible from some of his bold decision which helped to attract top class students and faculty members from IIMs, IITs and foreign universities. Prof. Sahay is responsible for construction of the state-of-the-art 200 acres of permanent Campus, which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on 20th February 2022.
Prof. Sahay was the Founder Director of IIM Raipur. In a short span of time of six and a half years, he raised the Institute from scratch as a “research-based business school”. IIM Raipur was ranked at 14th position in India in the NIFR 2017 ranking. Prof. Sahay was able to create conducive academic and research environment on campus to attract high quality faculty members from IIMs, IITs and foreign universities. He created the state-of-the-art campus, spread over 200 acres of land at Naya Raipur. The new campus is a blissful mix of modern architecture, culture & heritage of Chhattisgarh.
Earlier Prof. Sahay was instrumental in changing the face of MDI into a faculty driven top class research-based institute. He brought in radical changes at MDI and introduced new HR Policy & Service Rules, Research Policy, New Incentive Scheme for Research & Publications, Faculty Development Program etc.
Prof. Sahay transformed IMT Ghaziabad into an institute par excellence, which then was ranked as one of the top ten schools in India during his tenure. IMT was a turning point for Prof. Sahay and branded him as a transformational leader who championed for excellence in higher education in India. He was also responsible for setting up IMT Dubai and providing strategic guidance to IMT Nagpur.
Before moving to IMT, Prof. Sahay served at various positions at MDI including Dean (Research), Chairman (Doctoral Programs), Chairman (PGP) and Professor of Operations Management. He was also an Adjunct Professor at School of International Business, Queensland University of Technology, Australia and Founder Chairman of Centre for Supply Chain Management. He was the Principal Coordinator for Quality Improvement Program in Management, sponsored by All India council for Technical Education (AICTE). Under his able leadership, AICTE launched Doctoral Program in Management under QIP Scheme.
Prof. Sahay completed his B.Tech. from BIT Sindri; M.Tech. and Ph.D. from IIT Delhi. He has widely travelled all over the world and went to Germany and Japan under Fellowship Programs. He has about 40 years of experience in teaching, research, consultancy, executive education including over 12½ years in industry. He has worked both in India and abroad on various assignments for manufacturing and service industries. His teaching, research and consulting interests include logistics and supply chain management, production and operations management, project management, productivity management, business modelling, higher education & accreditation.
Prof. Sahay established Centre of Diversity and Inclusion inaugurated by then Hon’ble President of India, Sri Ram Nath Kovind Ji; Centre of Small Business Development with the support of Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship; four Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Incubation Centres, two at IIM Jammu (Jammu, Srinagar), one at IIM Raipur and another at MDI Gurgaon. Prof.
Prof. Sahay is a top-rated researcher with over 5230 citations, h-index of 33 and i10-index of 43. He has carried out 21 sponsored research projects and 40 consulting assignments and organized 18 major International/National Conferences. He has published and presented over 200 research papers in international/national journals and conferences. He has authored/edited 22 books in the area of Supply Chain Management, Humanitarian Logistics, World Class Manufacturing, Total Quality Management and Productivity Management. Prof. Sahay serves/served on the Editorial Board of many international journals (International Journal of Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Business Process Management Journal, and Journal of Indian Business Research) and number of national journals. He was the Founder Editor of International Journal of Value Chain, Editorial Advisory Board Member of International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Journal of Enterprise Information Management, International Journal of Services and Standards, International Journal of Mobile Learning, and Guest Editor of International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management, IJ of Service Technology & Management.
Prof. Sahay has received numerous awards for his significant research contributions, teaching and academic administration. Prof. Sahay honoured with the Life Time Achievement Award for Exemplary Leadership in Higher Education and Building Great Institutions, by Federation of World Academics in 2024. He has been honoured by IIT Delhi Alumni Association and has been given “IIT Delhi Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contribution to National Development” (2011). Prof. Sahay has been felicitated with "Distinguished Alumnus Award" by BIT Sindri (2010). Prof. Sahay received Honorary Fellow of Indian Institute of Materials Management (2014) and Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIIE), CSR Award for Excellence 2015 and Amity Academic Excellence Award (2016). He was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 by India CSR. He is the recipient of Award of Excellence in Research (2005), Best Teacher Award (2008), Nurturer of Talent Award (2008) and Best Director Award (2009). His book on Productivity Management was given Escorts Book Award (1998) and ISTD National Book Award (2000) and book on Supply Chain Modelling & Solutions (2007) and World Class Manufacturing received ISTD National Book Award (2001) for outstanding contribution to the understanding of management principles and practices. As a token of excellence for his research work, he received three best paper awards (1996, 1999, 2005).
Prof. Sahay is on the Board of JK Infrastructure Finance Ltd, Indian Institute of Food Processing & Technology and IIM Jammu. He was on the Board of Southeastern Coalfields Ltd.; AIIMS Raipur; BIT Sindri; Chips (Chhattisgarh Infotech & Biotech Promotion Society), Government of Chhattisgarh and Guru Ghashidas Central University, Bilaspur. He also served on the Board of IIM Raipur, MDI Gurgaon, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs under Ministry of Corporate Affairs, National Board of Accreditation; All India Management Association, Association of Management Schools, IMT Ghaziabad, and South Asian Quality Systems and Decision Science Institute. He is a member of Decision Science Institute (DSI) USA; Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), USA; INFORMS, USA.
Prof. Sahay has made significant contribution on the social welfare and community development front. Prof. Sahay is also working in the area of school education leadership and quality management. He worked towards health care and upliftment of scheduled cast and schedule tribes. He is closely working with the Dalit Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Dr. Ambedkar International Centre under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
